McClain Gallery is pleased to present our fifth solo exhibition with New York-based artist Bo Joseph, titled Daedalus Ciphers, featuring a new body of work of the same name. Throughout his career, Joseph has drawn on the structures embedded in cultural imagery: African ritual objects, Islamic ornament, and European iconography, among others. Daedalus Ciphers introduces a new form into the artist’s work: the labyrinth, a concept Joseph seeks to both encode and decipher.
BO JOSEPH (b. 1969, California) lives and works in New York. His work is distinguished by a complex and labor-intensive process that he has developed over the years, which begins with a selection of images culled from his vast archive of catalogs, personal photographs and books. In Joseph’s work, objects and spaces are visually stripped of normal reference points and distilled into solid shapes. Joseph cites Louise Bourgeois and Joseph Beuys as profound influences not only on form and color choices, but also on the use of recontextualization to extract the charge from found sources.
