Jason Villegas: Botched Simulacrum

McClain Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by Houston-native, Jason Villegas. Botched Simulacrum (or bungled likeness) is a collection of self-portraits representing the artist as a polo-tee fashion model in various stages of logo-inspired anthropomorphism. His drawings, paintings, and sculptural works are layered with collage fabric elements and references to fashion, various forms of advertising, pop culture, consumerism, and sexuality.

Villegas was born in Houston, Texas and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He received his BFA from the University of Houston and MFA from Rutgers University in 2007. His work has been in included in over 30 solo and group gallery exhibitions since 2003 and has been reviewed by Art in America, LA Times and Glasstire. Villegas is included in Phantom Sightings, Art after the Chicano Movement; an exhibition that originated at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and is currently on view at the
Phoenix Art Museum through September 20, 2009.
